LIKE MANY today, New York City interior designer Colin King uses his home as a live-and-work space, which means his Manhattan loft must please both head and heart. “I wanted a place in which I could be creative but also recharge,” he said. His solution: a décor scheme that’s richly layered but not chaotic. He ushered in various materials, many organic, for depth and texture, but restricted the hues to nuanced neutrals. “I bought a red slipcovered chair, but it ended up in storage because the color disrupted the serenity of the room,” recalled Mr. King.

He plastered the walls a dreamy, creamy beige, and installed gently curved seating upholstered in similarly toned linen. “They don’t steal the show, and they play well with others,” said Mr. King of the nonetheless ample sofa and chairs. Skirting hides the visual static that lots of furniture legs can impose and gives the pieces a cosseting touch of traditional style. A host of natural woods—cherry doors, pine floors, red-oak chairs, an ash wood dining room table—soften the industrial feel of the urban space, though exposed radiators and sprinkler pipes still suggest “factory,” a place where hard work must be done.
